Mom Update

Hi... good news! Mom slept through the night last night for the first time in months without waking up at all! She was in a great mood today as a result. She had good result also with her iron stores....she can stop taking iron (which will help her body return to normal functioning). Kris brought Gracie over last night, too, and she had Bernie and Willie visiting today. Hopefully, she'll sleep well again tonight!

Wonderful Weekend

Mom has been home 7 days today. It was a week of adjustment, sleeping at home in her new room o the first level. Our old family room if anyone remembers from the olden days with the orange walls and the shag rug carpeting has changed over the years, and now serves well as mom's new bedroom, therapy room, etc. Dan, John Wolfe and Kris remodeled this bathroom to include a shower, which Lisa rigged up a shower curtain for. She has a hospital style bed to help with elevating her legs, her new lightweight wheel chair is easy to maneuver and mom is getting more confidence in taking steps with us supporting her on the side. She stepped over to the shower this morning with more strength than I have previously seen. WOW! It's great to see improvement.

Our helpful and caring Delfina has stepped up to the plate with all the daily tasks....showering, cooking for mom, and administering her meds. The nurse and physical therapist are in place. Sue and James. We also plan to employ Dorothy for assistance with showers and Polish language. We hope to make Delfina as comfortable as possible and make sure she is happy with us, as we don't want to lose her. she is upbeat, encouraging mom and truly caring. This is a mice change from all the commotion at Rest Haven.

Lisa is cooking dinner at her house tonight, and will come to get 'the girls' between 3 -4 o'clock. Danny is home from college this weekend and it is also Justin's birthday (yesterday).

If anyone plans to visit, please call Lisa or Karla in advance. We will try to ward off schedule conflicts with therapies, other visitors, etc. Thanks for all the support! Mom is pretty happy being home, but looking forward to getting aroumnd on her own. She is not patient with herself...but things are going well.

Weekend summary

Saturday family meeting at Rest haven with potential caretakers and mom, Kris, Lisa, Karla, MIke, John , Kelly. Both nice polish women, one younger, experienced with stroke victims, and has good command of english. have to see if she is willing to take the job, mom thought both women were nice. Either one would live with mom at her house until we find a suitable ranch style town house or condo . Dan, Kris, Stephen working on the minor remodel of the bathroom. John Wolfe will be here (with Susi of course) to assist in carpentry, etc. this week. Sara also coming in. By this time next week we sill be home sweet home. Discharge date 9/15, don't know if there is any leeway for readiness. We are getting house re=carpeted asap. It will be a tough week, but we are all so thrilled that things are going well for mom lately...we all have positive feelings about her coming home, especially mom! I brought carpet samples over to mom today, carpet man measured also today. A friend of Mike's dad has a business and will try to get this done asap. We have gotten a lot of help keeping mom's spirits up from all her good friends, thank you all ...soon we will be able to visit in more comfortable surroundings. She sure loves her chocolates at med times, sugar free, but chocolate nonetheless. The other ladies at Rest Haven have followed her lead, and many of them also use the chocolates to kill the aftertaste of the medicines. All mom's numbers are good...blood pressure and sugars too. Pain in her legs and knee are still bothering her somewhat...mostly I think due to the edema, and swelling. When at home she will be able to elevate more consistently and earlier in the day. All is good.

Thursday night, late entry

Mom wss tired last night at 7...already in bed. We had tea, brought Toby and Mike for a visit, watched a bit of baseball.....she was in good spirits, and I believe she is up because going home soon. Family meeting tomorrow at noon with mom at Rest Haven. Looking forward to the results of Lisa's search for information and available services.

Happy Labor Day

We had a great night! Patsy and Rosie were pushing organic homemade zucchini pasta and sauce. They also had a dessert ...chocolate, figs, dates, no sugar. Mmmmmm. I brought home grown tomatoes, which the table helped us eat. I'm glad to see the grilled cheese rebellion has called a cease fire for the moment. Mom ate slowly, but well.

Mom's attitude is very positive, her movement in her left leg is much improved, as I noticed when we were showering. She is easily brushing her teeth and taking care of her dentures. The staff is still minimal. The poor girl was all by herself tonight. Seems Mondays are always short-staffed. I will make sure I'm there every Monday to assist with showering.

I was really pleased to see the bladder med(?) is working. I assume that she is on it....dindn't have a chance to catch the nurse. All I know for sure is that the cath is not in use...hoorah! I am so happy about this....it is a big deal to mom, self-image somewhat recovering on that front.

Thank you all for the great work lately...I think the home cooked food and outings are making all the difference!!!

Sunday update

Susi's party was a blast...lots of dancing, music, etc.

Kris, Stephen and Chris left this am , Mike and I are home already. Sue is visiting mom midday, lunch time on Monday. Bernie and Zena are also stopping in...Mike and I will be over for dinner then. Thanks to Lisa and Dan and family for taking mom on another outing! They went to Brookfield Zoo (one of mom's favorites) and then to their house for the remainder of the day. It was perfect weather for it. Susi and John are driving up on the 12th and will be here for 5 days or so. Sara is also planning a trip.....

Same old, same old

Incompetence is here to stay....the aid left an hour early at 7 pm tonight , no one bothered to tell us, or ask if we were still needing a shower, which we were. I had to talk to the desk and request a shower in the morning. The psychologist told mom she is ready to go home tomorrow ! ? What? I had a message on the machine that her meeting was rescheduled from today till this Wednesday. It makes no sense. She also was measured for a chair at Marianjoy which we have not received yet. Supposably, they give it to you upon your release, so I guess they expect her to fly herself home. I for one will be needing a full time shrink to decipher all the BS...I will not be writing a letter of recommendation either.

Mom is improving, eating well, but slow, having trouble only with meat it seems. Her facial expressions are very even, and she seems to chew easier. She had her yogurt with breakfast today, and another one showed up on her neighbor's dinner tray tonight, (mysterious, no?) Her posture was good today, no nap, a bit tired. She brushed her teeth no problem, rinsed, and we put the ball game on. She and I talked about Dad tonight. She's angry with him on one level. She says it was her turn, not his....She is working through it though. Her psychologist assured her that these feelings are fairly common for one who has been widowed. Her attitude in general is very good I think. She talks more often about returning home.

On the brighter side, Sonia and Dick and Elinor were visiting today. Thank you and keep up the visits, please. Lisa is hard-pressed this week, as Kris and I are both leaving to go to S. Carolina for Susi's 40th. I leave tomorrow, Tuesday, Kris leaves Wednesday, and John leaves friday as John and Kelly have an anniversary trip planned. Lisa can use all the help she can get as her boys are back in school and the sports schedule is grueling. I return Sunday night 9/4 so I will be around on Labor Day to relieve Lisa somewhat. There will be no therapies on the holiday, so visitors are encouraged.

I got mom two new herbal teas, Detox tea is supposed to help with swelling, and a chocolate flavored tea as well. Feel free to share a cup of tea when you are there!

Till next time...Karla
Kelly's bday gift is sitting on top of the hutch for the next time John and Kelly stop by. I worry that it will walk off....

A lazy Sunday afternoon

Mom and I visited for several hours through lunch time. Appetite was good, and told each other about our respective weeks, my vacation, and her birthday! She really enjoyed the arboretum, having susi here, and all the visits from friends. i checked out all her new clothes and we had a quiet massage day while watching WTTW. Her new gait belt (sp) is labeled with her name so it doesn't get mixed up with others. The pad Lisa made for the arm trough is really nice, much softer than the towel alone, and doesn't slip around. I was massaging mom's neck and discovered the head rest is removable, let's in more light around the back and is easier to maneuver the wheelchair too. I left it off, because she didn't seem to need it. Keep your eyes on this. I also had mom push with her foot so she got all the way back in the chair and was sitting straighter after a standing transfer - no complaints either. she loves her chocolate after ultram, because it helps with the bad aftertaste. Tea is out, so I am getting some that Ginger recommended yesterday when I spoke with her. She is doing well, taking up to seven steps, and looks forward to using the walker more often. She may be getting additional therapy at Rest Haven, too. In that case, she will visit with mom. If we know when she's coming we can arrange a nice lunch for the two of them. Mom laid down at about 3, was sound asleep by 3:30 and had legs elevated above heart. Her blood pressure was good, temp also good.

Positive attitude

Mom stood for 2 minutes today! She says it nearly killed her, but next week she will be up to 5....I was pretty impressed with the 2...moving in the right direction at last with this issue. We read the story to her about Ed O'Malley who also in his 70's had a left side stroke, but pneumonia and a tracheotemy to boot. He had swallowing issues too. He took about 9 months but is back living on his own in Chicago and rehabbed at Rest Haven. Told her Sara had a new vocation all lined up for her, inspiring others when she is well enough. we are going to Door County with the Marino side of Mike's family starting tomorrow....I told her to plan on coming with us next summer.

Mom's appetite was so-so. Dinner was a measly hot dog on a bun, chips, soup and cole slaw, but luckily, Mike brought her a Johnny's italian beef with peppers to substitute for the hot dog. She ate ok....still no yogurt for dessert. Mom also had a gift from Bernie, a Cubs hat, a card, and a new blanket from Lisa, two new pairs of shoes also from Lisa, aka her personal shopper. We brought Toby for a visit and he enjoyed meeting several patients. Mom seems disinterested in him when he's there, but enjoys hearing stories about how well he is adjusting, etc. Kris came tonight too, and Toby was truly thrilled to see him. Kris stayed to make sure mom got to bed after her shower with her feet elevated. I was glad to finally see a note to the staff in mom's room re: making sure to do dentures at night and check for them being in before breakfast every day.

Mom heard from Mary Lynn, her old boss at premier, and they talked about the staffing inadequacies of nursing centers all across the country. It is good to know mom's friends are keeping such good tabs on her, too.

More gray hairs...

On me, that is. mom had a wonderful morning in that she had all of us over, including Kris' family, Lisa's family and Mike and I. She enjoyed our homemade quiche, real potato salad, some chips, and cofee cake. we had perfect weather, there was harmonica and guitar, a photo of Susi's new pool, and a photo of Toby in his new house. All this seemed like it might pick her up a bit, but that was temporary. we got back to the room, was very tired out, and lethargic. Depression, pain, typical stroke behavior, don't know. My hair is getting grayer by the minute! One consolation, she ate well. She thought it was realy funny that I was telling her she might be getting too skinny. She has told me that almost all my life, even when I am plump. Joanne Johnson came by too, and we were elevating very swollen legs....no Ted hose on. Went to lie down, no sling in room. lisa and I got to room staff meeting tomorrow with doc, Barbara, and new case worker. We spoke with nurse on duty...Carolyn....was very understanding, gave us Barbs boss' phone number in case we can't get anywhere with Barb. Lisa and I did the slide board with mom. She could hardly keep her eyes open long enough to get through it. Don't know if she is sleeping poorly, or meds are getting in her way? Is she so depressed that she isn't trying, or is she just having a bad week? We are all getting anxious to see her having such a hard time. I feel that our prayers are falling on deaf ears, so to speak. Men have always been hard of hearing anyway...I suggest we take a homeopathic approach, beef up her nutrition right away. good idea Susi, about the shakes with protein powder. Sara says cut her some slack, she could use it. Mom says the air in the dining room is freezing them all out. If you are there at or before dinner, can you all check to make sure she has her shawl or a jacket for her shoulders. We'll see what the meeting brings tomorrow. Jokes and good cheer welcome! Meanwhile, the gray keeps gaining ground.

Commonality

Hi all, Friday pm mom had the parade of children, John and Lisa (and Kirby) overlapping, Lisa and Karla overlapping, and Karla and Kris. We found her in better spirits earlier, and as the night wore on, she just got too tired to concentrate. She does the word puzzles in her red bag with relative ease. Dinner was indeed lame as Lisa would say. Her chicken was ground, completely dry on a white bun. We asked for mayo,(everyone at the table rejoiced) and we made a chicken salad with her lettuce and tomato, which she preferred on a cracker (a lame saltine is better than a lame white bun). She commented on how much she loves crackers. This is a good thing to bring for a treat. She prefers whole wheat, crunchier types. I brought some chocolate silk and she had about a cup of that. Her sugars are well within range, as she gets them taken every night right before eating. We should stay aware of this, as Sara has warned, a really low number (below 80?) is not good. She has been around 100-130 ish for several weeks. They have stopped bringing yogurt with dinner. I will call Amy in dietary to request yogurt again and soy milk. She has been really responsive in the past.

I apologized to mom for getting tough with her on Thursday night regarding all "the poor girls" who work there and how bloody hard they work. I emphasized that they have CHOSEN this work, that they are GETTING PAID, and that we are NOT AN INCONVENIENCE TO THEM! I was rather a bit too emphatic, I think. She said that's ok, she's not mad at me, etc.

Commonalities: she is eating poorly at dinner, losing weight, and avoids protein. She would benefit from homemade tuna and crackers, crackers and cheese, buona beef, and beans, soy milk, etc. She loves all of them. We would also do well to make an extra effort for meals on the weekend, when there's more time to fuss, and less therapy sessions. She also needs to drink MORE WATER. she always asks for hot tea with dinner, I make it, and it never gets drunk.

We might also find some reading re: stroke success stories. Sara had a good response to reading with her and taking turns (her janet ivanovich book is there).

We need to stick together, keep our eyes open, and keep the staff aware that we are watching them. Most of the nurses there are really nice, and she likes them.

What do you think about a day pass for a weekend day to go out? Maybe she needs a change of atmosphere? Her roommate got a four hour pass to go get her nails done! The weather has been beautiful, too.

Settling in

The pooch, that is. Toby's a bit under the weather - I think the food he ate at the kennel last week did not agree with him. He's a bit hoarse (not a bad thing right now!) probably from barking his head off at the kennel last week. And he's a bit confused - still very tentative around what he considers a strange house.

The good news - he's behaving very well. This is probably because he doesn't feel yet like this is his "kingdom" to rule. Our walks have been terrific, with zero incidents to report. We're both keeping him very close the entire time. Some freedom is curtailed, yet he still loves getting out.

We've set up a bed in the basement, where he stays during work hours and another upstairs next to ours. He's been using both well. We've set up his blanket in Mike's office, where he's been hanging out a lot...

Sleepyhead

No wonder, what a busy day can do. I just missed you guys, and we ate dinner, not much, but went to bed after wards. I did a foot bath and foot lotion, got her as comfortable as possible, and turned off the lights at 8:30. Nurses kindly buzzed me out. Dentures are cleaning....laundry delivery tomorrow. She is thrilled with the Toby news, and Mike will certainly be raised even higher in saintliness. Watch out for the shiny halo.

Toby Update

Mike took Toby to K-9 guy, Shawn, for an interview Friday afternoon. Toby walked into a room full of other dogs, mostly caged, and didn't freak out. One dog was being walked in the same room on a leash, and there was no disturbance there either. Could it be our Toby? Shawn said that Toby is probably not terrier at all, that many people use that term loosely. It is much more likely that he has mastiff in his blood, as the double dewclaws and brindle coat are more common to that breed. He could also have some pit bull in him. Officially, he's all mutt.

Shawn said Alpha dogs feel tremendous stress to be leading all the time, and the stress/responsibility is what makes them act out. He would be a lot calmer if he could relinquish that responsibility to his owner(s). He also marveled at Toby's excellent physical condition for his age - must have been all that squirrel chasing and those wonderful walks. Shawn didn't think the basement during the day would be a problem. He will need a bed area there, and possibly a bed area for nighttime that is separate. Based on the assessment, mike and I would like to adopt him, and let mom have occasional visitation rights. She said it's awfully nice of us to do it, and offered to pay for a dog run on the side of the garage. We probably won't do a run, but we will clean up the area for his use. We also have to make the basement a bit tidier, so he doesn't get into anything dangerous. Mike and I are working on that this weekend. Kris offered to help us install a gate to the basement. It hasn't been finalized, but we think his 'boot camp' will start on Aug. 19th when we go on vacation. At that time, we will relieve everyone from their assistance. The thought is that he can start off fresh with us, in a new home, after boot camp. Thank you all!

I can't believe it either! But it's a good thing.

Aah, Real Food!

Today the dietician and the pt got together and straightened out mom's dietary requests. For dinner there was barley and mushroom soup, bbq pork sandwich, pasta salad, oh my! A brownie and yogurt for dessert. It's nice when the right hand and the left hand finally talk to each other.

Sara arrived safely during dinner and she offered to locate a different style sling for mom. Thank Goodness! Mom wanted me to sew on some padding to the one she has, which would make it harder to adjust if needed. I luckily won't need to do that.

With the heat wave going for two days and more, the room is quite stuffy. All the common areas are fine, though. Kris is bringing a fan next time he comes. Doctor Mupa stops in to see mom tomorrow, and Sara will get details from him. Sara, call around if you need relief tomorrow after work. Kris is working, but I can meet up with you, as Mike is busy anyhow.

We made an appt to have Toby screened by the K-9 trainer this Friday to see if he is 'workable'. Keep your fingers crossed....

There are word puzzles in the red bag and Scrabble to do in the evening. The Cubs and Sox are equally well received, and the left arm excercises/stretches are in the chair pouch. Please do something every time you go. We need to coax in this area or she will get lazy in her visual acuity and she will get stiffer. I believe acupuncture was ordered, too. Sara will inquire about massage tomorrow, since I forgot on Monday.

Stay cool everyone.

Monday Meeting

I talked to Amy, the dietician, over the phone this morning. She said no problem making the changes we need. She thanked me for the call.

I saw mom just before dinner time. Our grilled cheese sandwich dinner came w/o bread or cheese. The plate had tomato, pickle and bacon. We had a laugh and gave the bacon away. The dining staff supplied us with a sandwich. The yogurt request was honored as was real salad. I've left Amy a message that mom does not require pureed bread and that we'd like regular bread with meals, preferably wheat.

The patient care evaluation was simply their venue to tell us mom's discharge date, which is tentatively Aug. 22. They were finished, but I wasn't. I had my list ready to go: bed transfers (standing instead of sliding), pain medication being given after therapies, missing Mysoline for tremors, improper use of the arm trough (it was on backwards) and the staff's inexperience using the sling. I emphasized that these issues would make rehabbing very difficult in the time they've tentatively allotted for mom's recovery and that if she doesn't have the necessary tools to succeed, we are all wasting our time. Dr. Mupa thanked me for the feedback and was very nice about it. Nurse Frumpy didn't have much to say, but took excellent notes. Caseworker Stacy was floored that I gave them flack over these issues... I guess her mom hasn't gone through rehab.

She will be getting Ultram (pain med) 3x per day, unless she doesn't need it - ie. refuses it. She will be getting her Mysoline 2x per day (7 am / 5 pm). Blood sugar was 109 tonight.

She had a shower before dinner and was clean and shiny! There was a really nice flower/plant arrangement in her room, but the message on the tag was incomplete. I called the flower shop to find they were sent by Mike's parents in California. Mom (and we all) says "thank you!".

John stopped by before dinner for a visit and Kris stopped in as I was leaving.

Day of Rest

Last night, John and Kelly brought mom a really nice tempurpedic head rest. She was enjoying it today. They also gave her a manicure and brought yogurt. Today was a no therapy day, and Kris went mid day to visit. The Cubs were on, and mom took a pretty good nap. After Kris left, Joanne from Premier stopped by with fresh flowers. Mom was resting when I arrived just before dinner. We had dinner with Lou, and mom was thrilled to have crackers with her tuna! Texture is a real treat these days. I also brought her some little yogurts, and she ate one with dinner. The other three are marked on the packaging. They are in the chart room down the hall in that fridge. Please see to it that she has some if you are on duty. She ate well, and we had a nice bright window, so we did almost a full game of Scrabble after dinner. She was in good form, and was playing well, (ie pundit, devoid, among others) . We saved the game to finish another time. At 8 she was getting ready for bed and she was wide awake. Looking for a Sox game, but we settled on Desperate Housewives. I forgot to do her dentures.....I hope the staff has the wherewithall to do that each night. (?) I will bring up these things tomorrow at the 2:15 meeting. If you have concerns, let me know so I can ask. We only get a chance every two weeks to talk directly with them. Kris found out that showers are Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Please make an effort to see that she gets a shower...I told her tomorrow to expect one. She is so damn concerned about the poor little girls working there that she doesn't want to trouble them. She will let me help with this, so I know she will let Lisa, Sara or Susi also.

Keep up the encouragement! Thanks.

Learning Curve on the Uprise

Mike and I learned a lot today...

Mom was in physical therapy when we arrived around 10 am. We met her pt, Ginger and another pt from Marianjoy which will keep us connected to all mom's favorites over there. Therapy went ok, mom still listing, but the fact that she can tell she's listing is good, means she knows she's off balance.

We watched some HGTV and had lunch. Lunch was decent, and mom ate well. Her stomach is less upset, and she's been regular. Yeah! I put a call in to dietary to request yogurt in her daily diet. If you are looking for a treat to bring, yogurt is an excellent choice. After lunch, she had occupational therapy(?) with Mercedes. Her regular ot is Megan. Mercedes gave us a packet with exercises for her left arm, shoulder, and hand. She taught us how to do them, and there's a picture guide in the pouch of mom's chair. She suggests doing them twice a day, once at the minimum. If you are there please be diligent about this. They only take 5-7 repetitions each and there are about a dozen.

She also suggested once a day to practice reading out loud, doing word puzzles, crosswords, etc. The Scrabble is down under the bed, too. She also suggested we encourage this every day, to help her retrain her pathways. I have a work puzzle book from the dietary staff, which I will enlarge at work on the copier. I'll put the puzzles and pencils in a book bag . She suggested the large print Reader's Digests. Mom always liked those, too. I will stop at the library to check one out. Other large print books are also welcome and might be a good gift idea.

The other thing Mercedes did was to give us a new arm piece for lefty. It should stay on the wheelchair, it's called an arm trough. It is much more supportive than the slippery thing she was resting on before, which it turns out was not a proper fit to that chair, causing it to wobble. This trough will give her much more support for her shoulder, you can lay a terry towel in it and it's not sweaty. Please check to see that this piece is on the chair at all times, and no one removes it. The sling is found, and needs to be worn on every transfer from chair to bed, bed to chair, etc. this is extremely important to support the shoulder and protect from dislocation. The nice soft sling that Lisa made is too loose, so please use the white one. It is only necessary to wear it during the transfer, so it shouldn't cause a problem with her neck hurting, as it only needs to be on for short spurts of time.

Mom's shakes were extreme today and I asked if she was getting that medication twice a day or only once in the am. Mom always takes it twice a day at home to get the best control of her tremors. It turns out that medication was somehow missed since the transfer last Tuesday! No wonder she was shaking so badly. The nurse, Irma called and had it ordered ASAP so she will have it today. She apologized for the mistake, and this is just one example of why we need to be present. They don't know that her shakes are never that bad, so it never occurrd to them she might be missing a medication! We are her best eyes and ears because we know her the best.

I have been renamed 'Karla the Crusader'. We will all have new names in due time, so be careful what you do!

As we were getting ready to leave, mom was all set up to watch the Cubs game, and Keith, Ronnie and Elinor were on their way in. Perfect timing...John and Kelly are visiting tonight. Stay cool everyone.

Thursday night Powwow

We had a nice visit this evening. John was over after work, as was I. It is really on our ways home, respectively. After John left, we went to dinner as Kris and Sue were arriving. We had a discussion about Toby. It was brief, and she was in agreement that he is not able to live with her again. We can't take the chance of a fall. We are still discussing our two options...adoption into the Marino family at 438 Brewster lower level, or having him go visit dad.

My old client Carol had met mom yesterday for lunch, and we chatted with her after dinner tonight. Carol, her friend, and Kris and Sue and I talked about Toby, about Carol going home, and seeing me next season at Hinsdale Nurseries.

I called Susi and Sara about mom's sensation in her feet and legs that she is cold and wet. Also had it on her bottom, she asked the nurse to put a clean, dry pad on the chair. Is this something we need to research further? I mentioned it to the nurse, and did not hear back in the short time I was there. Susi wants to order massages, but we are not yet sure what time is available after therapies. Susi recommends we get yogurt in her diet on a daily basis to combat the antibiotics. yogurt treats are welcome!

Mike is off to walk Toby, and I'm off to bed.

Tuesday night, past

Mom had a busy day yesterday, with Lisa moving her in and helping to get a bed with a window, John and Kelly stopped by on their way home from work, and Diane Weniger came by, too.

Rest Haven has a very nice feel to it, with several small areas for visiting in groups, some outside, some inside. Dinner was interesting, as we met a lady and her daughter from Lombard also. She was quite a character. They serve in a dining room, and I even got offered coffee!

We stopped to admire the finches in the aviary, but had an early night. We caught the last inning of the Cubs game, and I stopped to see another patient who happened to be an old client of mine from work. She had a hip replacement and is going home this week. I hope she had a chance to see mom today and say Hi, but who knows. Mom was to have her assessments from their therapists today. Lisa will know more tonight.

Peg is doing very well recovering from her knee surgery, and is up walking already! Thank goodness no problems there. She has promised to make a visit as soon as she can get back to driving.

Monday Evening

We are looking forward to our next step in the journey...subacute rehab at Rest Haven West, starting tomorrow. Contact information will follow soon. Mom is feeling ok, alertness excellent, and had a nice visit tonight with Ppat and Alex Kapocious. We visited till about 9 pm and she was getting ready for bed when I left. We packed up for the move tomorrow. Lisa, please track down the blanket! I have laundry and clean clothes, vase, and cards. All jars and creams are in the little suitcase. Please don't forget her cane, our scrabble, and letter box from Ginger.

We will miss the nice people there. We had a great aide tonight, Virginia, who could do transfers all by herself. She has a technique which got her underneath mom, and mom's strength in her right leg is really improving too. thank goodness for small improvements....but we are back on antibiotics for a UTI. Encourage drinking LOTS of water, everyone! Thanks.

Backtracking, Saturday daytime

Mom finally got a long awaited massage, which she really liked. Followed by therapy from Alan PT where she practiced walking. She now says Aye,Aye,Aye instead of Ouch,Ouch, Ouch, but she did it. She is pretty wobbly yet. We have a lot of work to do in this dept. Occupational therapy followed. The ot gave me a name of some placemat type material that can help mom to get more traction and assist lefty to stabilize a jar or other container while opening.

We sat down stairs for lunch, and awaited Mike and Toby. Just as they arrived, mom had a call of nature, and apologized but couldn't wait for Toby. She was then so tired, that she just wanted to lay down, so Mike and I walked Toby around the beautiful grounds and I went back up for a little visiting time. She commented that Toby probably doesn't remember her, but that it's good he has all his brothers and sisters, Karla and Mike, John and Kris. Lisa escaped the list somehow! This makes our decision to try to place Toby with an adopted family even more critical and difficult. If anyone has any pointers on this, I would welcome the advice.

Thanks to Kris for trying to get mom to eat her dinner, and as usual, I know I'm in trouble for suggesting it. She certainly has tried, but is uncomfortable in the digestive area. maybe tomorrow she'll feel more hungry. Sunday night is shower night, so please make an attempt to convince her or help with the shower. Ladies only on the helping, though.
